Job Purpose Statement

The role provides technical reinsurance support to ensure that NCBA Insurance effectively manages risk exposure, secures appropriate treaty and facultative protection, and maintains financial stability. The role supports the development, placement, servicing, monitoring and renewal of reinsurance programmes in line with underwriting requirements, contractual obligations, regulatory expectations and internal governance standards. The role also supports accurate reinsurance accounting, claims recoveries, reporting and documentation to ensure transparency, timely settlement, reliable financial records and adherence to industry best practice.

Key Accountabilities (Duties and Responsibilities)

Reinsurance Technical Support & Placement

  • Assess policies and portfolios to determine reinsurance requirements, retention levels and appropriate risk transfer solutions.
  • Analyse underwriting data, exposures and loss history to recommend suitable treaty and facultative arrangements.

Reinsurance Operations, Accounting & Reporting

  • Ensure timely execution, renewal, documentation and system set-up of reinsurance agreements and treaty parameters.
  • Ensure accurate recording and reconciliation of reinsurance premiums, claims, commissions and related balances.
  • Maintain complete records of ceded and assumed reinsurance contracts and prepare contractual, regulatory and management reports.

Claims Recoveries & Servicing

  • Coordinate claims notifications, documentation, settlement follow-up and recovery tracking with reinsurers and brokers.
  • Track recoveries and ensure timely recognition and reconciliation with Claims and Finance.
  • Escalate disputed or delayed recoveries and support timely resolution.
  • Support reinsurance-related reserving and unearned premium considerations.

Audit & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with reinsurance treaties, underwriting guidelines, delegated authorities, internal policies and applicable regulations.
  • Maintain complete documentation and audit trails to support governance and audit readiness.
  • Monitor market and regulatory developments and advise management on relevant implications.

Stakeholder Service & Collaboration

  • Maintain effective relationships with reinsurers, brokers and other market stakeholders.
  • Provide timely technical support and collaborate with Underwriting, Claims, Finance and other teams to ensure efficient processing and resolution of reinsurance matters.

Learning & Growth

  • Maintain a development plan aligned to role requirements, complete required learning hours and pursue relevant professional development in insurance and reinsurance.

Job Specifications

Academic and professional qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Insurance, Actuarial Science, Finance, Economics, Business or a related discipline.
  • Professional insurance qualification such as ACII, AIIK or an equivalent recognised qualification; reinsurance-specific training is an advantage.
  • Membership in good standing of a relevant professional body, where applicable.

Work experience:

  • At least 7 years’ relevant experience in general insurance and reinsurance, including a minimum of 3 years in a senior specialist, supervisory or managerial capacity.
  • Demonstrated experience in treaty and facultative programme design, placement, renewal, wording review, portfolio and exposure analysis, and application of retention and risk appetite parameters.
  • Hands-on experience in reinsurance accounting, bordereaux, reconciliations, claims recoveries, counterparty balances, regulatory reporting and audit support.
  • Proven ability to negotiate and manage relationships with reinsurers and brokers and to influence senior internal stakeholders across Underwriting, Claims, Finance, Risk and Compliance.
  • Strong analytical and reporting capability, with proficiency in insurance core systems, spreadsheets and data tools used for exposure, accumulation and performance analysis.
  • Working knowledge of Kenyan insurance and reinsurance regulation, governance requirements, financial controls and relevant international market practice.
