MoReLink PROJECT

Vacant Position: Research Assistant

Location: Nairobi County

Purpose of the Project

To assess the effectiveness of a mobile hotline intervention in speeding up referrals and improving access to oncology care for children with cancer at Kenyatta National Hospital.

Job Summary

The Research Assistant will support the implementation of the MoReLink Project by coordinating participant recruitment, managing referrals, ensuring accurate data collection, and supporting Project operations.

The role requires close collaboration with primary healthcare providers, referral centers, and the Project team to ensure timely diagnosis and adherence to Project protocols.

Responsibilities and Requirements

  • Manage the Project referral mobile phone to receive and respond to calls from primary healthcare facilities.
  • Screen potential participants against Project eligibility criteria.
  • Liaise with primary care providers to obtain verbal consent prior to referral.
  • Obtain written informed consent from participants or guardians upon arrival at the facility.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date participant enrolment records.
  • Collect, enter, and verify Project data in the database, ensuring high standards of data quality and integrity.
  • Coordinate and manage the referral process from primary care facilities to the referral center (PHO unit).
  • Ensure timely follow-up with referring facilities to track patient progress through the diagnostic pathway.
  • Facilitate effective communication between caregivers and referral care teams to support timely diagnosis.
  • Monitor participant progress throughout the referral and diagnostic process.
  • Document key timelines, outcomes, and any delays or challenges encountered.
  • Ensure all Project procedures are conducted in accordance with approved protocols, ethical standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and uphold participant privacy at all times.
  • Maintain inventory of Project materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Support day-to-day operational needs of the Project.
  • Assist in preparing reports, presentations, and documentation for internal meetings, funders, and research dissemination.
  • Maintain regular communication with primary care providers, referral teams, and Project staff to ensure smooth Project implementation.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute insights to improve Project processes.
  • Provide regular updates to the Principal Investigator.
  • Perform any other responsibilities assigned by the Principal Investigator in support of the Project.

Qualifications, Experience, and Skills Required

  • Must be registered by the Nursing Council of Kenya
  • Must have a Diploma in Kenya Registered Nursing/Midwifery (KRN/M) or Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing (KRCHN)
  • Must have at least six (6) Months experience in research post-internship
  • Must have computer skills (Attach computer training certificate)
  • Must have Excellent skills with RedCap (Show on your CV)
  • Excellent communication skills: Must be able to communicate to the Project participants well and with PI via email and Zoom
  • Must be trained in Human Subjects Protection (Attach valid certificate)
  • Excellent skills with mobile technology
  • Language skills: fluency in English and Kiswahili
  • Team player with ability to work closely with other Project staff at the site
