Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is a State Corporation established through the Science and Technology (Amendment) Act of 1979, which has since been amended to Science, Technology and Innovation Act 2013. The 1979 Act established KEMRI as a National body responsible for carrying out health research in Kenya.
Responsibilities or duties
- Design and oversee statistical analysis plans, study designs, sample size calculations, and advanced analytical methodologies for CHAMPS and related studies.
- Build, validate, and implement statistical and epidemiological models to address complex research, policy, and programmatic questions.
- Oversee the integration, harmonization, and management of large surveillance, clinical, research, and public health datasets.
- Establish quality assurance processes, validate data accuracy and completeness, maintain documentation, and ensure compliance with ethical, privacy, and data protection requirements.
- Perform statistical analyses using R, Stata, Python, and GIS tools, and develop visualizations to support evidence-based decision-making.
- Prepare technical reports, analytical summaries, manuscripts, presentations, and communicate findings to stakeholders, partners, and scientific audiences.
- Provide leadership, mentorship, training, and performance oversight for statisticians, data analysts, and other technical staff.
- Manage statistical activities across multiple projects, review analytical outputs, and collaborate with multidisciplinary and international partners.
- Contribute to research proposal development, identify methodological innovations, and support organizational strategic planning.
- Support and advise on health information systems, interoperability standards, digital health infrastructure, electronic data capture platforms, and geospatial surveillance applications.
Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)

- At least four (4) years’ relevant work experience. Mandatory
- Bachelor’s Degree in the following fields: Mathematics, statistics, biostatistics, Informatics, Computer Science or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution Mandatory
- Master’s Degree in statistics, biostatistics, health statistics, Biometry or equivalent qualification from a recognized Institution will be an added advantage. Added Advantage
- Proficiency in using statistical software such as R, STATA, Python etc. Mandatory
- Membership to a professional body where applicable Mandatory
- Familiarity with data quality assurance concept and data cleaning processes. Mandatory
- Demonstrated experience in data management and analyst in a health research environment. Mandatory
- Demonstrated ability to manage large disparate data sets and experience with quantitative analysis. Mandatory
- Familiarity with database systems and information technologies including cloud server management. Mandatory
- Proven track record of peer-reviewed publications in health research. Mandatory
- Training or certification in Health Informatics, Medical Informatics, or a closely related field (e.g., graduate coursework, professional certificate, or equivalent demonstrated competency). Desirable
- Experience working with Electronic Health Records (EHR/EMR) systems, Health Management Information Systems (HMIS), or integrated public health surveillance platforms (e.g., DHIS2, OpenMRS, REDCap). Desirable
- Familiarity with health data standards and interoperability frameworks, with the ability to apply these in multi-source data integration contexts. Desirable
- Awareness of health data governance, patient data privacy regulations, and ethical frameworks applicable to health informatics in low- and middle-income country (LMIC) contexts, including familiarity with national health data policies. Desirable
- Experience with geospatial health data tools and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for epidemiological mapping and spatial analysis of surveillance data (e.g., QGIS, ArcGIS, or equivalent). Desirable
