Purpose of the Role

As a Senior Content Reporter (Youth, Gender and Identity), you will originate, report, film, edit and present distinctive, high-impact journalism across Africa, with a particular focus on stories that explore the experiences, challenges and opportunities shaping the lives of young people, as well as issues relating to gender and identity. You will identify original stories, uncover underreported perspectives, and translate complex issues into compelling, audience-focused content for digital and broadcast platforms.

As part of our audience growth strategy, we are strengthening our Africa newsgathering and production capability through a Senior Digital Content Reporter (Youth, Gender and Identity) based in Nairobi. The role supports the BBC’s ambition to better serve and grow young and female audiences, ensuring their experiences, perspectives and priorities are reflected in our journalism. Through distinctive storytelling and innovative digital formats, the role will help deepen audience engagement, increase relevance and build loyalty with audiences who are central to the future growth of BBC News.

Key Responsibilities

  • Apply strong editorial judgment to identify compelling angles, context and storytelling approaches that make complex stories relevant, engaging and easy to understand for target audiences.
  • Support coverage of major news and special events, contributing to planned output while remaining agile and responsive to breaking developments and shifting priorities.
  • Use AI-enabled tools responsibly within workflows, improving speed, efficiency and creativity while maintaining full editorial oversight, accuracy and adherence to BBC standards.
  • Contribute to continuous editorial improvement, sharing ideas, insights and practical approaches to strengthen storytelling and digital output.
  • Ensure full compliance with BBC editorial, legal and policy standards, including due accuracy, impartiality, fairness and privacy.

Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience as a senior reporter or journalist with a strong digital and video production focus.
  • Experience interviewing young people and contributors from diverse backgrounds with sensitivity, fairness and respect, ensuring inclusive and accurate representation.
  • Maximise opportunities offered by existing and emerging technologies to their fullest extent.
  • Excellent scriptwriting and storytelling skills, with the ability to simplify complex issues.
  • Confident on-camera presence and presentation skills.
