Senior IMEO Methane Transparency Consultant
Result of Service

  1. Grow the steel sector as the second major transparency sector after Oil&Gas with OGMP 2.0 2. Leverage the SMP Database as catalyst for stakeholders in the sector

Work Location
Remote possible, Preferred: Nairobi, Kenya
Expected duration
12 months
Duties and Responsibilities
The UN Environment Programme’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) is a data-driven, action-focused initiative that drives deep reductions in methane emissions– the second biggest contributor to global climate change and a key opportunity to reduce warming in the near-term. IMEO’s mission is to provide the open, reliable, and actionable methane data needed to cut emissions at the speed and scale necessary to achieve the Paris Agreement goals. To do this, IMEO is harnessing a methane data revolution under way thanks to rapidly advancing technology and momentum for methane action. IMEO collects, integrates, and reconciles data from methane-detecting satellites, scientific measurement studies, rigorous industry reporting through the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0), and national emissions inventories. These initiatives are game-changers for climate action – and as a core implementing partner of the Global Methane Pledge, IMEO is shaping the future of methane mitigation. A Senior IMEO Methane Transparency Consultant is needed to support the expansion of IMEO's efforts towards translation of data into action in the metcoal and steel industries. 1. Steel Methane Programme (SMP) Coordination SMP is a UNEP International Methane Emissions Observatory initiative designed to tackle methane emissions across the steel supply chain. The programme aims to establish the "Gold Standard" for measuring, reporting, and mitigating these emissions. Building on the success of OGMP 2.0, SMP engages companies and stakeholders to set ambitious mitigation targets, improve measurement practices, and adopt technologies to significantly reduce emissions in alignment with the Global Methane Pledge. On the foundation of the work of the past period, the intent is to invest in creating a global team with the scale and scope to target this 1Gt per annum opportunity. 2. Expansion of the IMEO Data Platform to Include Metcoal Methane (‘SMP Database’) IMEO aims to enhance its "Eye on Methane" data platform to include comprehensive information on metallurgical coal methane emissions. This platform will integrate data from modelling activities, country-level reporting, corporate disclosures, satellite observations, and scientific research to create a centralised resource for stakeholders, enabling targeted mitigation efforts. 3. Metcoal and Steel Data Analysis and Outreach 4. Team Building, Communications, and Organisational Support The consultant will report to the Head, International Methane Emissions Observatory.
