KRCS Overview

Kenya Red Cross Society (hereafter, KRCS) is a humanitarian relief organization established by an Act of Parliament, Cap 256 Laws of Kenya. As an auxiliary to both the national and county governments, KRCS works to alleviate human suffering and save lives of the most vulnerable in our communities. The KRCS Strategic Plan 2021- 2025 stipulates its 3rd focus areas as Youth Leading Positive Change in their communities. KRCS has committed to support the protection of children and young people and facilitate initiatives that help them to reach their potential and lead positive change in their communities.

To achieve this, the organization has the following specific objectives under its 3rd goal on youth;

  • Youth living healthy and responsible lives maximizing their innate potential
  • Safe spaces for youth representation, participation and meaningful engagement

About the project

The Basketball Experience – Disability Inclusion (BE-DI) Project is a 16-month pilot initiative funded by AFD and NBA Africa and implemented by the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) youth department. This sport-for-development project leverages basketball to foster inclusion, resilience, and essential life skills among children with visual, hearing, and physical disabilities. The program will be implemented in 40 schools across Nairobi, Kiambu, Kajiado, and Machakos counties.

Job Summary

The Sign Language Interpreter (SLI) will play a crucial role in ensuring the active participation and inclusion of Deaf and hard-of-hearing learners in all project activities. The SLI will support effective communication between learners, coaches, and facilitators during basketball life-skills clinics, school assemblies, and other scheduled sessions.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Interpret real-time communication between Deaf learners and coaches during all project activities.
  • Provide sign language interpretation during training sessions, meetings, and games.
  • Assist learners in understanding instructions and engaging meaningfully in activities.
  • Collaborate with coaches and aides to adapt communication strategies to suit learners’ needs.
  • Foster inclusive practices and help create an accessible, welcoming learning environment.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional and ethical standards of interpretation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Diploma or certification in Sign Language Interpretation from a recognized institution.
  • At least 2 years of experience working with Deaf or hard-of-hearing children or youth within the KRCS context.
  • Knowledge of Kenyan Sign Language (KSL) is mandatory.
  • Experience working in educational or youth development settings is an added advantage.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with coaches, aides, and program staff.
  • High level of cultural and disability sensitivity.
  • Commitment to inclusion, equity, and child safeguarding.
