  • The Social Behavioral Change & Communication Officer will focus on spearheading the integration of Social and Behavior Change (SBC) using an integrated approach for all technical program design. This role will provide technical and operational support in the development of a systematic, planned and evidence-based strategy and process for SBC as an integral part of program design, development, planning and implementation to promote measurable behavioral and social change. The SBC Officer will utilize approaches that facilitate communication, engagement, empowerment and participation of shareholders, partners, and communities to achieve successful and sustainable results in relation to the overall intent of FH’s Program Model (resilient and flourishing communities).
  • The SBC and Communication Officer will also support in promoting a positive image of FH Kenya through development and implementation of an effective communications strategy, guiding both internal and external communications.

Principal Responsibilities 

  • Integrate Social and Behavior Change (SBC) Approach into Technical Areas
  • Work with the Country and Program Director, Technical Specialists and global and national staff to ensure that SBC is thoughtfully integrated into design and implementation of activities for each technical area of flourishing.
  • Support Technical Specialists in a participatory process to co-design comprehensive SBC strategies with shareholders using the following steps:
  • Lead an intentional behavior selection exercise
  • Guide the design, data collection and analysis of formative research on behavioral drivers
  • Facilitate the process of co-designing interventions to address behavioral drivers in an integrated manner across all areas of flourishing
  • Collaborate with MERL staff to monitor and evaluate both implementation of activities and behavioral outcomes.
  • Build capacity of country-level staff in SBC concepts and skills.
  • Document and share experiences and results with the larger FH community as relevant.
  • Provide technical oversight to ensure all SBC interventions, messages, and tools meet global standards, are culturally appropriate, and align with FH’s Program Model.
  • Review all SBC-related materials and community-facing messages for accuracy, clarity, and do-no-harm compliance.
  • Strengthen community structures youth groups, women’s groups, religious leaders, morans, CHVs to drive sustained behaviour change and norm transformation.
  • Facilitate community dialogues and local accountability processes that reinforce collective action and system-wide behaviour shifts.
  • Lead pre-testing, prototype development, and iterative refinement of SBC interventions and messages based on community feedback and MERL data.
  • Facilitate regular reflection and learning sessions with AP teams to adjust SBC strategies for improved effectiveness.
  • Develop, implement, monitor and evaluate communication strategy 
  • Formulate and deliver effective, country communication strategy and activities, in cooperation with country leadership and global communications team  
  • Lead the efforts in consolidating and telling the FH Kenya story internally and externally 
  • Collect and document key successes and best practice within country office and support the development of media and external relations messages in collaboration with Country Director.
  • Compile, package and publish program and corporate communications in accordance with the new FH’s Global Identity
  • Provide SBC and Communications inputs into concept notes and proposals, including behaviour frameworks, formative research designs, and costed workplans.
  • Produce content for FH Marketing and Communications 
  • Serve as point person for collecting stories and material for internal/external communication and marketing/fundraising purposes. This will include production of written stories as well as provision of basic video and photos as required
  • Provide support in coordinating in-country logistics for scheduled resource trips [photography, video, story-gathering trips]  
  • Ensure impact stories gathered from program evaluations are well documented and accessible and program impact is effectively communicated to appropriate stakeholders. 
  • Support the use of social media to promote activities occurring in the field. 
  • Support in updating of content into FH Hub.
  • Build and support FH Kenya’ staff to identify, package and disseminate impact about FH Kenya
  • Build capacity of FH Kenya’s staff to document, package and share impact stories 
  • Strengthening internal communication systems, structures and procedures 
  • Develop social media marketing strategies for development programs. 
  • Research, identify and share best practices  with all Area Programs to improve program communications interventions  and for scaling up 
  • Coordinate closely with county departments, UN agencies, NGOs, and private sector partners to harmonize SBC approaches and promote consistency in messaging across sectors.
  • Represent FH Kenya in technical working groups related to SBC, nutrition, WASH, protection, health promotion, and resilience communication.
  • Develop and disseminate behaviour change messages for emergency contexts, including drought, conflict, pandemics, and early warning early action triggers.
  • Ensure alignment between SBC messaging and FH Kenya’s humanitarian response protocols.
  • Participate in local, national and internaional communication/PR networks to amplify FH’s image 
  • Participate in coalitions and networks to learn and share best practices
  • Showcase FH products at public exhibitions for sharing purposes
  • Media networking to increase FH’s visibility 

Job Level Specifications 

  • Demonstrated skills in SBC strategy development, preferably for integrated programming across several technical sectors and development areas.
  • Experience in applying a range of SBC approaches that address changes in social and gender norms and structures as well as individual behaviors, and that go beyond messaging to catalyzing community action.
  • Strong leadership, facilitation, and systems-thinking skills 
  • Ability to translate complex behavioral insights into practical actions for AP teams.
  • Conceptual and research skills, with ability to think strategically.
  • Proven ability to develop effective working relationships with all levels of internal and external clients, government counterparts at all levels, local organizations, private sector counterparts, and program partners.
  • Demonstrates good knowledge and understanding of how to assess capacity, plan, and carry out appropriate SBC capacity building activities, including training using adult/dialogue education methods, coaching, supportive supervision, and mentoring. Have practical experience in applying the competency. 
  • Excellent written/oral communication and documentation skills required.
  • Professional level proficiency in spoken and written English is required.
  • Demonstrated computer-operating skills, including proficiency in Google platforms, Microsoft Office products, and virtual technologies such as Skype and Zoom.
  • Ability to communicate effectively across various levels of the organization. 

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of innovative SBC approaches. 
  • Participatory facilitation skills and human centered design experience.
  • Experience designing, conducting or collaborating with formative research, as it pertains to developing SBC strategies, approaches and materials.

Experience

  • 3-5 years of progressively increasing technical responsibility in SBC.
  • Prior experience in a complex, matrixed organization, with the ability to scale processes in a global, professional, service organization.
  • Non-profit ministry experience is a plus.

Education/Certifications

  • Bachelor's degree in communication/communications for Development, Mass media, Journalism, social sciences or related discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience.
