Main Purpose of Job

This is a key role at the heart of the British High Commission Nairobi, offering significant opportunities to shape the development agenda to include the most vulnerable and marginalized groups. The position aims to make a tangible difference to people living below the poverty line in Kenya by ensuring the UK’s development portfolio effectively addresses poverty, builds resilience, and promotes inclusion.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Lead efforts to address inclusion in Kenya through BHC Nairobi’s policy and program portfolio, including research, evidence gathering, and knowledge sharing on demographics, social relationships, and political economy.
  • Provide cross-cutting advice on equity and inclusion during business planning processes and review portfolio investment proposals to align with central policies and best practices.
  • Deliver social development advice to BHC Nairobi’s development portfolio and policy engagements.
  • Collaborate with advisers across thematic pillars, government stakeholders, and partners to promote the participation of the poor and excluded in shaping social and economic development.
  • Ensure greater social, economic, and political inclusion and accountability in development and political processes.
  • Lead the implementation of UK commitments to tackling Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG), human rights, and disability-related issues across HMG’s portfolio in Kenya.
  • Oversee the delivery and monitoring of the Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) Strategy, working with the Regional Gender Lead and BHC Nairobi GESI Working Group.
  • Support HMG colleagues across outcome goals and teams in Kenya, contributing to VIP briefings, Parliamentary Questions (PQs), and public reporting on social issues.
  • Contribute professionally to the Social Development Adviser (SDA) cadre, dedicating 10% of time to sharing knowledge and expertise.
  • Remain flexible to respond to emerging priorities or new workstreams as required.

Essential Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

  • Understanding of and ability to influence structures, policies, programs, and processes at national and local levels.
  • Proven ability to work closely with and influence stakeholders on technical policy issues.
  • Experience in building systems for the empowerment of poor and marginalized people and enhancing accountability of state and non-state actors.
  • Knowledge and expertise in social protection.
  • Strategic thinking with the ability to develop actionable strategies and recommendations.
  • Experience engaging internationally on complex and sensitive matters.
  • Ability to work across diverse teams, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability.
  • Proficiency in conducting and interpreting social and political analyses and translating them into actionable strategies.
  • Experience in poverty and vulnerability analysis and monitoring.
  • Understanding of and experience in promoting gender equality and social inclusion across various sectors.

Desirable Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

  • Strong program management experience.
  • Experience in running or overseeing regional campaigns.
  • Knowledge of the political economy of East Africa.
