Supervises: Sorting Plant Managers, Maintenance Team, MRF Admin Support

Purpose of the Role:

  • The MRF Manager is responsible for the overall leadership, coordination, and performance of the Material Recovery Facility operations. This includes optimizing waste processing efficiency, managing plant personnel and supervisors, ensuring equipment reliability, enforcing health and safety compliance, and contributing to the commercial success of the facility. The role requires strong technical knowledge, team leadership, and a deep understanding of sorting and quality management processes.

Key Responsibilities:
Operational Oversight

  • Lead and coordinate all MRF operations across sorting, baling, maintenance, and dispatch
  • Analyze plant performance using OEE and implement efficiency improvement initiatives
  • Ensure daily targets are met while maintaining quality and safety standards

Team Leadership & Performance

  • Supervise Sorting Plant Managers and support teams; provide strategic direction
  • Oversee training, capacity building, and development of all MRF staff
  • Set KPIs and lead performance appraisals in collaboration with HR and site leads

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Enforce company safety protocols and regulatory requirements
  • Oversee regular safety audits, equipment inspections, and compliance reviews
  • Champion a culture of safety awareness and continuous improvement

Equipment & Maintenance

  • Oversee equipment use and preventive maintenance schedules
  • Ensure minimal downtime and timely response to breakdowns
  • Liaise with workshop and external service providers for repairs and parts

Inventory & Reporting

  • Ensure accurate tracking of materials in and out of the plant.
  • Monitor stock levels and ensure timely dispatch of sorted recyclables
  • Compile weekly and monthly reports on plant metrics and operational challenges

Commercial & Stakeholder Support

  • Work closely with the sales team to support recyclable material dispatch and customer service
  • Coordinate with logistics, procurement, and external partners to ensure smooth plant operations
  • Contribute to budgeting, cost control, and revenue optimization strategies.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Degree/Diploma in Production/Engineering/or any other related technical field.
  • KCSE:- Grade B and above
  • Additional training in production management or operations is an advantage.

Relevant Experience:

  • At least 5 years of experience in plant management, manufacturing, Packhouse, or production environments.
  • At least 2 years in a senior supervisory or management role.

Business Understanding:

  • Deep understanding of end-to-end waste management operations (sorting, baling, storage, sales, dispatch)
  • Knowledge of key plant performance indicators including OEE, throughput, and recovery rates
  • Familiarity with market trends in recyclable materials and circular economy strategies

Key Competencies and Skills:

  • Proven ability to lead large, diverse operational teams
  • Strong planning, analytical, and problem-solving abilities
  • Proficiency in interpreting production data and generating performance reports
  • In-depth understanding of occupational health, safety, and environmental regulations
  • Proficiency in Excel, Microsoft Office Suite, and plant management software
