Job Responsibilities
The Swimming Instructor is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and instruction activities associated with an 82-foot-long by 63-foot-wide by 12-foot-deep swimming pool. This position ensures the safety of patrons, compliance with Navy guidelines, and delivery of high-quality swimming programs. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Facility Operation and Maintenance:
- Operating and maintaining the swimming pool in accordance with NAVMED P-5010-4, NAVSUPPFAC instructions, CNICINST 1710.3, and other applicable Navy instructions and manuals.
- Ensuring pool cleanliness, proper filtration, and water quality through regular monitoring and maintenance.
- Inspecting pool equipment and addressing any maintenance concerns or coordinating repairs in a timely manner.
- Enforcing all Navy and local safety guidelines, policies, and procedures to maintain a safe swimming environment for all patrons.
Swimming Instruction and Safety:
- Planning and conducting swimming lessons for individuals or groups of varying ages and skill levels, focusing on basic swimming techniques, water safety, and skill development.
- Monitoring and supervising swimmers to prevent accidents and provide lifesaving interventions when necessary.
- Educating pool users on proper pool safety protocols, including rules for behavior, emergency response actions, and safety equipment use.
- Administering first aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)/automated external defibrillation (AED) as necessary during emergencies.
Customer Service and Supervision:
- Providing exceptional customer service to patrons, addressing questions, concerns, and feedback with courtesy and professionalism.
- Ensuring an enjoyable and safe atmosphere for both recreational swimming and organized lessons.
- Assisting in coordinating events at the pool, such as swimming competitions or training exercises, to meet customer needs.
Minimum Requirements
- Certification as a Swimming Instructor through a recognized organization such as the American Red Cross or YMCA or equivalent.
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications, with a commitment to maintain certifications as required.
- At least 1 year of experience in swimming instruction or lifeguard services.
- Thorough understanding of swimming pool operations, safety protocols, and maintenance procedures.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to teach individuals of varying skill levels in a patient, professional manner.
- Ability to successfully pass contract medical requirements and maintain compliance for the duration of deployment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in an austere OCONUS (Outside the Continental United States) environment with a multi-national workforce.
- Valid country driver’s license.
- Country visa (as required in line with the U.S. Department of State Foreign Clearance Guide).
- Familiarity with NAVMED P-5010-4 and other Navy pool management or safety instructions.
- Experience teaching swimming or water safety courses in a government, military, or equivalent organizational setting.
- Experience with large swimming pool maintenance and water quality testing.
