Purpose for the Job
The job holder will provide dedicated day-to-day leadership of the Tax Section, with full accountability for tax compliance, reporting, planning, and related finance operations. The role is responsible for ensuring adherence to all applicable tax laws and regulations, overseeing timely and accurate tax filings, managing tax risks, and providing strategic tax guidance to support the organisation's objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities
Tax Compliance: Ensure timely and accurate filing of all statutory tax obligations (Corporation Tax, VAT, PAYE, Withholding Tax, Excise Duty, and other applicable levies) in line with the Income Tax Act, VAT Act, Tax Procedures Act, and Finance Act updates.
Tax Reporting: Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual tax reports and reconciliations for management and Group reporting, including tax provisions and effective tax rate analysis.
Tax Refunds and Offsets: Prepare and follow up on tax refund and offset applications with KRA (including PAYE and WHT credit offsets), tracking approvals through to utilisation.
TIMS Management: Oversee full compliance with the Electronic Tax Invoice Management System (eTIMS), including invoice validation, exception resolution, and staff guidance on eTIMS requirements.
Transfer Pricing Management: Maintain transfer pricing documentation and policies for intra-group transactions, ensuring compliance with Kenyan transfer pricing rules and OECD guidelines, and support related-party benchmarking.
Tax Planning and KRA Audit Management: Provide proactive tax planning input to minimise tax exposure within the law, and manage KRA audits, queries, and objections, including liaison with tax advisors where required.
Forecast Management Develop and maintain tax and cash flow forecasts to support liquidity planning and timely settlement of tax obligations.
Budgeting: Support preparation of the departmental and tax-related budget, monitor actual performance against budget, and report variances.
Key Competencies
- Strong technical tax knowledge with the ability to interpret and apply statutory changes.
- High attention to detail and accuracy in reporting and reconciliations.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, particularly for legacy balance and credit validation issues.
- Effective communication and stakeholder management skills, including liaison with KRA and exteal advisors.
- Leadership and team management ability to run the tax section independently.
- Proficiency in ERP/accounting systems and MS Excel; familiarity with eTIMS platforms.
- High level of integrity and confidentiality given the sensitivity of tax and financial data.
Knowledge And Skills Required
The job holder must possess the following skills.
- Sound working knowledge of the Income Tax Act, VAT Act, Tax Procedures Act, Finance Act, and eTIMS requirements.
- Experience in the insurance, financial services, or audit firm will be an added advantage.
- Prior exposure to transfer pricing documentation and KRA audit management is highly desirable.
- Minimum 5–7 years' progressive experience in tax and financial accounting, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or section-head capacity.
Professional and Academic Qualifications
The job holder must possess the following qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field.
CPA(K) or ACCA fully qualified; a professional qualification/certification in Taxation is an added advantage.
Prior exposure to transfer pricing documentation and KRA audit management is highly desirable.
