Background

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology is situated in Juja, 36 kilometres North East of Nairobi, along Nairobi-Thika Highway. It was started in 1981 as a Middle Level College (Jomo Kenyatta College of Agriculture and Technology (JKCAT)) by the Government of Kenya with the generous assistance from the Japanese Government. Plans for the establishment of JKCAT started in 1977

Job Summary

The successfully candidate will be mandated to support regional efforts in promoting energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in line with IMO regulations and guidelines. The Technical Expert will work under the MTCC Africa Head and Project director, JKUAT, national and regional maritime stakeholders, governments, and international organizations to ensure Africa’s active participation in global maritime decarbonization efforts. The role involves technical support, research, and capacity building to help stakeholders implement sustainable practices tailored to Africa’s maritime sector.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and implement regional GHG emissions inventory and reporting systems in line with IMO guidelines.
• Support data collection, reporting, and inventory management for GHG and energy data from African ports and shipping operators.
• Provide technical guidance on compliance with IMO regulations, including MARPOL Annex VI, EEXI, CII, and DCS.
• Collaborate with port authorities, flag states, and operators to establish Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) frameworks.
• Apply modeling tools to assess policy, technological, and regulatory changes for sustainable shipping.
• Promote awareness and build capacity through workshops, training, and knowledge-sharing forums on sustainable maritime practices.
• Strengthen partnerships with IMO, other MTCC regional centers, NGOs, and industry stakeholders to coordinate GHG reduction efforts across Africa.
• Conduct research on technologies and best practices for emissions reduction and energy efficiency relevant to African ports and shipping.
• Prepare technical reports, policy briefs, and knowledge products to guide stakeholders on sustainable shipping solutions.

Minimum Academic Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Engineering and Maritime related discipline. However, candidates with BSc Electrical/Mechanical or other engineering disciplines with a bias towards Energy/Climate Policy, or a related field will be considered.
• At least 3 years of relevant experience in environmental management, marine engineering, or maritime operations. Experience in GHG emissions reduction, energy efficiency, or biofouling management is desirable.
