GE Technical Storeman

2. Generic Description of Duties

The GE Technical Storeman is responsible for the receipt, inspection, storage, issue, distribution, accountability, and maintenance of tools, equipment, infrastructure materials, parts, products, and construction supplies.

The postholder must be able to identify different types of infrastructure materials and maintain accurate, auditable records both manually and electronically. The role includes conducting stock checks, stock audits, stock rotation, and monitoring batch numbers and stock condition.

The postholder will handle and operate machinery, lifting equipment, tools, and materials safely and in accordance with applicable procedures. The role requires the ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high standards of accuracy, security, safety, customer service, and accountability.

4. Main Duties and Responsibilities

4.1 Procurement, Receipt and Distribution

  • Procure, issue, and distribute materials, products, parts, and supplies based on information contained in authorised requisitions.
  • Identify long-lead items and advise the Chain of Command accordingly.
  • Receive deliveries from suppliers and verify that:
    • Goods received correspond with the order.
    • Quantities are correct.
    • Items are present and accounted for.
    • Goods are free from damage.
    • Items meet the required specification and quality.
  • Report discrepancies, shortages, damage, or other delivery issues.
  • Organise the return of faulty, damaged, or unsuitable goods to suppliers.
  • Maintain appropriate records of receipts, issues, returns, and stock movements.

4.2 Stock Management and Storage

  • Determine appropriate storage methods based on stock turnover, item characteristics, identification requirements, and available storage facilities.
  • Maintain effective stock rotation, including monitoring batch numbers and expiry dates where applicable.
  • Conduct regular stock checks, stock audits, and reconciliation activities.
  • Examine and inspect stock items for wear, damage, deterioration, or defects.
  • Report damaged or unserviceable items and initiate appropriate repair, replacement, or disposal procedures.
  • Maintain accurate and auditable stock records manually and electronically.
  • Ensure stores are appropriately secured and protected from damage, deterioration, theft, and unauthorised use.
  • Maintain good housekeeping standards within storage and work areas.

4.3 Tools and Equipment Management

  • Inspect the serviceability of tools and equipment returned by tradespersons following use.
  • Maintain accurate records of tools and equipment issued, returned, inspected, repaired, or replaced.
  • Ensure tools and equipment are stored securely and maintained in a clean, safe, and serviceable condition.
  • Arrange calibration of tools and equipment through the correct MOD chain and procedures.
  • Monitor calibration requirements and maintain appropriate calibration records.
  • Ensure equipment is used, maintained, and stored in accordance with relevant procedures and manufacturers' requirements.

4.4 Systems, Records and Administration

  • Operate Prom PCT for the accounting and management of infrastructure stores.
  • Use departmental computer systems and software to procure stores, maintain stock accounts, and produce reports.
  • Maintain accurate electronic and manual records of stock, equipment, tools, requisitions, deliveries, issues, returns, and audits.
  • Prepare and compile stock reports as required.
  • Use Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel for stores administration, accounting, reporting, and record keeping.
  • Ensure records remain accurate, current, traceable, and auditable.

4.5 Suppliers, Contractors and Customers

  • Manage and maintain effective working relationships with customers and suppliers.
  • Escort suppliers and contractors when visiting the GE Department.
  • Assist suppliers and contractors with access and coordination requirements while ensuring applicable site procedures are followed.
  • Understand customer and supplier requirements and provide practical solutions where possible.
  • Ensure Value for Money (VfM) when acquiring stores, taking into account suitability, cost, maintainability, quality, and delivery requirements.
  • Advise the Chain of Command of supply issues, delays, long-lead items, or other matters affecting service delivery.

4.6 Health, Safety and Security

  • Handle and operate machinery, lifting equipment, tools, materials, and vehicles safely.
  • Comply with all relevant Health and Safety at Work requirements and departmental procedures.
  • Follow applicable COSHH requirements and safe systems of work.
  • Apply appropriate manual handling techniques.
  • Ensure equipment and materials for which the postholder is responsible are properly secured, maintained, and used.
  • Report damaged, unsafe, defective, or unserviceable equipment and facilities through the appropriate Chain of Command.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly working environment.

5. Secondary Duties and Working Conditions

  • Duties may be performed away from the normal duty station at established BATUK locations for prolonged periods.
  • Duties may also be performed at austere BATUK locations for shorter periods.
  • Work may be undertaken both indoors and outdoors.
  • The role requires frequent standing and walking and occasional:
    • Bending and balancing.
    • Stooping and kneeling.
    • Crouching and crawling.
    • Climbing.
    • Reaching and grasping.
    • Lifting and moving objects.
  • Employees may be required to respond to emergency call-backs on a 24-hour basis.
  • Occasional evening, weekend, or public holiday working may be required during emergencies or special events.
  • Carry out any other duties reasonably commensurate with the trade and grade as directed by the MLM.

6. Competencies, Qualifications and Experience

6.1 Essential Requirements

The successful candidate must have:

  • A recognised/proven certificate in Supply Chain Management.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • A firm understanding of stock rotation and appropriate storage methods.
  • Ability to use computer systems to procure stores and maintain stock accounts.
  • Good working knowledge of local suppliers, including basic prices, delivery costs, and expected delivery timelines.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel for accounting, reporting, and administration.
  • A clean and valid Kenyan driving licence.

6.2 Desirable Requirements

The following would be advantageous:

  • Valid Material Handling Equipment (MHE) / Industrial Forklift Licence.
  • Completed Manual Handling Training.
  • Previous experience managing or maintaining a medium-sized storage facility.
  • Experience working in a technical, engineering, construction, maintenance, or infrastructure stores environment.

7. Training Requirements

The postholder may be required to undertake or maintain the following training:

  • Specialist computer and departmental software/accounting applications.
  • Health and Safety at Work.
  • COSHH Awareness.
  • Equipment Care, including use and maintenance.
  • Manual Handling Training.
  • Military-specific driving assessment/conversion.
  • Any additional departmental training required for the safe and effective performance of the role.

  • Inspect the serviceability of the tools and equipment's after use from Tradesman and keep the record.

  • Escort Suppliers and contractors when they visit GE Dept.
