To oversee the daily operations of the theatre department, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality surgical services. The Theatre Manager is responsible for staffing, compliance, equipment management, scheduling, and optimizing theatre utilization. The role also carries the responsibility of generating revenue by attracting surgical consultants and increasing theatre activity.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Oversight & Patient Safety
- Ensure adherence to surgical safety protocols and infection prevention and control (IPC) standards.
- Monitor surgical procedures to ensure compliance with clinical guidelines and hospital policies.
- Promote a culture of patient-centered care, safety, and continuous quality improvement.
Staff Management
- Supervise and mentor theatre nurses and support personnel.
- Develop duty rosters to ensure adequate coverage for all surgical services.
- Facilitate performance appraisals, training, and professional development of theatre staff.
Theatre Operations & Efficiency
- Coordinate theatre schedules in collaboration with consultants and the wards to minimize idle time and cancellations.
- Ensure proper preparation, sterilization, and availability of surgical instruments and supplies.
- Maintain theatre readiness and quick turnaround between procedures.
- Liaise with biomedical and maintenance teams to ensure all theatre equipment is functional and routinely serviced.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Maintain up-to-date documentation, including surgical logs, incident reports, and theatre utilization data.
- Ensure compliance with Ministry of Health guidelines and internal hospital standards.
- Lead internal audits and implement corrective actions as needed.
Revenue Generation & Business Growth
- Support hospital revenue targets by actively increasing surgical bookings and theatre utilization.
- Engage with consultants, specialists, and surgeons from external networks to bring procedures to Luton Hospital.
- Collaborate with the Business Development and Sales teams to market theatre capabilities to insurance partners and private clients.
- Monitor and report on theatre income, utilization trends, and identify opportunities for growth.
- Provide exceptional support to consultants and patients to encourage repeat procedures and referrals.
Inventory & Cost Management
- Monitor and control the usage of surgical supplies and medications to reduce wastage.
- Ensure timely requisitioning and accountability of consumables, linen, and theatre items.
- Participate in cost-cutting initiatives without compromising the quality of care.
Communication & Coordination
- Act as the central liaison between theatre, wards, pharmacy, radiology, pathology, and management.
- Facilitate pre-operative and post-operative coordination for smooth patient flow.
- Participate in hospital leadership meetings and contribute to operational decision-making.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or a related clinical field.
- Registration with the Nursing Council of Kenya.
- Higher Diploma in Perioperative Theatre Nursing (an added advantage).
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a theatre setting, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
- Knowledge of surgical protocols, hospital operations, and inventory management.
