Role Summary

To promote and maintain caring, highly professional standards of perioperative nursing ensuring safe and quality care to patients

The team leader is expected to supervise staff in all aspects of managing the unit and the resources while promoting job satisfaction for the theatre team.

Duties and Responsibilities

SYSTEM

  • Booking/scheduling of procedures
  • Training/ CME schedules and rotations
  • Equipment and Instrument inventory management
  • Allocation of roles and responsibilities
  • Clinical and quality indicators to be monitored
  • Handing over process
  • Patient safety procedures
  • Retention of doctors
  • Efficiency and reducing turnaround time
  • CSSD quality assurance
  • Theatre reports-monthly
  • Increase of theatre revenue
  • Reduction of wastage
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

PROCESS

  • Ensure high quality and infection prevention and control services are offered
  • Perform daily rounds ensuring  a clean and safe environment is maintained for the patients at all times.
  • Maintain quarterly theatre contamination checks
  • Ensure staff report early for planned surgeries and receive report at 7.30am everyday
  • Maintain and allocate nursing teams considering competencies and skills, ensuring each individual staff delivers to expectations.
  • Be keen and pay attention to the doctors’ needs and preferences to ensure smooth surgical procedures.
  • Ensure the planned surgical procedures are carried out as scheduled and planned
  • Creating of monthly rota, ensuring correct skills mix and considering that those who are learning are allocated to cover sessions
  • To always ensure handover between shifts  are completed and documented for all cadres of staff
  • Maintain inventory of equipment and instruments, with quarterly major counts and reports
  • Ensure and safeguard the hospital /patients and equipment from damage, wastage or loss.
  • Take responsibility for doing the following and for ensuring maintenance of accurate records/ documentation for:
    • Site marking
    • Surgical Safety checklist
    • Medication records chart
    • Fluid charts
    • Nursing Cardex
    • Surgical Instrument and swab count sheet
    • Nursing Care plans
    • Family and patient education
    • Discharge summary
    • Charge sheet
  • Specimen movement and records
  • Monthly quality and process indicators
  • Ensure monthly theatre reports- accurate statistics, quality control theatre utilization, theatre delays and any other reports as required
  • Call more surgeons and anaesthetists to use the facility and maintain quality  services to ensure retention
  • Have in place processes that reduce wastage in all areas

PEOPLE

Internal ;-

  • Communicate with other professional staff both in and out of the theatre to ensure that the care given to patients is of appropriate standard.
  • Make sure that all information concerning patients and their treatment remains confidential at all times.
  • Build capacity of teams by ensuring all staff are trained and skill checked  twice a year perform random skill checks on staff regularly
  • Ensure staff report on time
  • Monthly departmental meetings
  • Teach and delegate role of shift incharge liaise with doctors to identify their challenges and encourage their use of the theatre
  • Liaise with other HODs to ensure patients and doctors have a good experience

External;-

  • Maintain personal contact with the doctors to ensure their needs are met, and grievances addressed.
  • Be observant of the patients’ needs and requirements, and assist where appropriate in providing care to meet those needs which are within the total care plan of the patient.
  • Maintain personal contact with patients ensuring that they understand their procedure and that their needs are met.

 Required Qualifications

 Academic and professional qualification

  • Diploma/Bachelor of science in nursing
  • Higher diploma in perioperative nursing an added advantage

Experience

  • 5 years
  • At least three (3) years working in operating room environment

Required license/ certificate

  • Healthcare management course from a recognized institution added advantage
  • Registration with the Nursing Council of Kenya
  • Valid practicing license
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification
