About Pixel Systems

We are a small software agency that avoids the hype cycles of the technology industry. Instead of flashy consumer apps or marketing sites, we build the software that keeps businesses running behind the scenes. This includes things like custom admin panels, CRM integrations, and database migrations. Our clients come to us because we provide fixed quotes, show our progress every week, and deliver stable software using reliable tools like Node, React, and Postgres. We are a team of experienced developers who value clarity, direct communication, and getting things done without unnecessary meetings or complex management layers.

The Role

In this role, you will work on the frontend and backend of our internal tool projects. A lot of the work involves moving data between different systems and making sure it shows up correctly in a user interface. You will help us write components for our React dashboards, clean up legacy code, and assist in connecting our software to external APIs. One of your main tasks will be supporting our East African financial technology partner as they expand their internal monitoring systems. You will be expected to write clean, readable code that a teammate can understand and maintain. This is a full-time, fully remote internship where you will be paired with a mentor to help you learn how we ship production-quality software.

What You Bring

To succeed as an intern here, you need to be organized and comfortable taking technical instructions and turning them into working software. We are looking for someone who enjoys the logic of building systems and solving problems more than the aesthetics of visual design. You should have a foundational understanding of how the web works, including HTML, CSS, and basic JavaScript. We value developers who are not afraid to ask questions when they get stuck and who appreciate the importance of writing tests and documentation. Since we work remotely, you must be a clear communicator who can provide status updates and describe technical challenges in plain English without the need for constant supervision.

Helpful Background

While we do not expect you to be an expert in everything, having some familiarity with the following tools will help you get settled more quickly:

  • Basic experience with React or another modern frontend framework from a school project or hobby.
  • Familiarity with Node.js and how to build simple server-side logic or scripts.
  • An understanding of relational databases like Postgres and how to write basic SQL queries to retrieve data.
  • Comfort using GitHub for version control and collaborating on code reviews.
  • An interest in how APIs work and how to consume data from third-party services.
  • Experience managing your own time and tasks in a remote or self-directed project environment.
  • A preference for writing code that is easy to read rather than code that is clever or complex.

Working at Pixel Systems

Working here is different from a typical tech startup. We do not have endless brainstorming sessions or disruptive goals. We focus on solving operational headaches for our clients so they can stop using spreadsheets and start using real databases. Because we are a remote-first company, you will have the autonomy to manage your own schedule as long as we stay on track for our weekly demos. You will be part of a senior-heavy team where the emphasis is on mentorship and helping you learn how to build software that lasts for years. The work is steady, the expectations are clear, and we make sure that everyone gets to ship code that actually gets used by real people, like warehouse managers or finance teams. This is a paid internship, and we provide a compensation package that is competitive for the role and the current market.

Pixel Systems is a place for people who like to build things that work. We are a small, no-drama team that values honesty and reliability above all else. If you are looking for an environment where you can focus on writing code and learning the ropes of professional software development without corporate politics, you will fit in well here. We believe in providing our interns with real responsibilities and the support needed to meet them. Our goal is to help you grow into a developer who can handle the practical, messy details of real-world software systems.
