An Assistant Cook or Kitchen Assistant is responsible for food preparation, cleaning, and supporting the head cook to ensure the kitchen runs smoothly. Key skills include following instructions, maintaining hygiene and food safety standards, working under pressure, and performing tasks like chopping vegetables, washing dishes, and managing inventory.
Food Preparation: Peeling, chopping, and prepping vegetables, meat, and other ingredients. Cooking: Assisting with cooking and preparing dishes as directed by the head cook. Cleaning: Washing dishes, pots, pans, and utensils; sanitizing food prep areas, counters, and equipment. Kitchen Maintenance: Cleaning floors, walls, and ovens; managing waste and rubbish. Stock Management: Receiving deliveries, storing food items, checking dates, and organizing supplies. Safety and Hygiene: Following and enforcing all food safety and hygiene protocols.
Technical Skills: Basic cooking techniques, ability to use kitchen equipment, and food preparation skills. Hygiene and Safety: Strong understanding of food safety and sanitation rules. Teamwork and Communication: Ability to follow instructions and communicate effectively with kitchen staff. Physical and Mental Stamina: Ability to work in a fast-paced environment under pressure, and stamina for standing and lifting. Attention to Detail: Meticulousness in following recipes and maintaining cleanliness. Organization: Good time management and organizational skills to handle multiple tasks. Adaptability: Flexibility to adapt to changing needs and tasks in a busy kitchen.
