JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title Cargo Surveyor (1 Position)
Location Mombasa, Kenya
Department Technical, Marine & Cargo Surveying
Reports to Lead Cargo & Risk Surveyor
What it entails?
The incumbent will be responsible for inspecting, measuring, and assessing the quantity, condition, and stowage of cargo transported by sea or air. The role ensures compliance with industry standards and regulations, investigates cargo loss or damage, determines the cause and extent of losses, and prepares accurate, impartial survey reports.
A successful cargo surveyor combines technical expertise, analytical skills, and sound judgment to accurately assess cargo condition, identify losses or damage, and provide reliable, impartial reports. The role offers significant autonomy and requires regular travel to ports, terminals and onboard vessels.
Job Duties:
- Understand the assigned job together with any other requirements as requested by the client and guided by internal work instructions.
- Inspecting cargo before, during, and after loading or unloading.
- Assessing the condition, quantity, and quality of cargo.
- Investigating cargo loss, damage, contamination, or shortages.
- Identifying the cause and extent of cargo damage.
- Verifying compliance with shipping, safety, and contractual requirements.
- Collecting evidence through photographs, measurements, samples, and witness statements.
- Preparing accurate, impartial survey reports with findings and recommendations.
- Liaising with ship-owners, insurers, cargo owners, freight forwarders, and port authorities.
- Monitoring cargo handling, storage, and transportation to minimize risk.
- Supporting insurance claims by providing technical assessments and documentation.
- Ensuring inspections comply with relevant industry standards and regulations.
- Advising clients on loss prevention and best practices for cargo handling and storage.
- Lead, train, and mentor interns/junior cargo surveyors, ensuring high performance and adherence to company standards.
- Develop individual performance metrics and drive commitment to and maintenance of outstanding performance.
- Actively contribute towards achievement of company business objectives.
- Always comply to applicable safety rules and operational procedures
- Network, identify, explore and facilitate opportunities for business growth
Job Requirement:
- Minimum of a Degree in any technical field with three (3) years progressive experience preferable in either Warehousing, Shipping & Logistics, Insurance as well Marine Cargo Inspection.
- Thorough, observant and attentive to detail.
- Methodical, with an investigative approach to gathering information.
- Excellent communicators, both verbally and in writing with good command of English
- Capable of understanding technical plans and able to convey complex information clearly.
- Good negotiators, tactful, assertive and persuasive
- Good at managing their time effectively.
- Able to write clear reports and draw simple plans.
- Confident using computers.
- Able to develop strong relationships both internally and externally is imperative
