Role Context
The Chief Engineer is a critical leadership position responsible for the overall operation, maintenance, and safety of the vessel's engineering systems. This role demands a high level of technical expertise, strong leadership skills, and a commitment to upholding the highest standards of safety and environmental compliance. The Chief Engineer will lead a team of marine engineers and technicians, ensuring the smooth and efficient running of all machinery and equipment onboard.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the operation, maintenance, and repair of all engineering systems, including propulsion, power generation, HVAC, and hotel services.
- Ensure compliance with all international, national, and local regulations regarding safety, environmental protection, and maritime law.
- Develop and manage the engineering department's budget, including procurement of spare parts and supplies.
- Lead, mentor, and manage the engineering team, fostering a culture of safety, efficiency, and continuous improvement.
- Conduct regular inspections and preventative maintenance to ensure the reliability and longevity of all equipment.
- Manage emergency response procedures related to engineering systems.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance, repairs, fuel consumption, and inventory.
- Liaise with other ship departments, shore-based management, and regulatory bodies.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Valid Chief Engineer unlimited motor or steam license (STCW III/2).
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as Chief Engineer or Second Engineer on large passenger vessels or similar complex maritime operations.
- Extensive knowledge of marine diesel engines, electrical systems, automation, HVAC, and wastewater treatment systems.
- Proven leadership and team management skills.
- Strong understanding of maritime safety regulations (SOLAS, MARPOL) and environmental best practices.
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Proficiency in English, both written and spoken.
- Familiarity with modern ship management software and systems.
Experience Needed
A minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in marine engineering, with at least 3 years in a senior engineering role (e.g., Second Engineer) on vessels of comparable size and complexity. Experience on luxury cruise ships or expedition vessels is highly desirable.
Work Environment
This position is based onboard a luxury superyacht, involving extensive travel and time away from home. The work environment is dynamic, demanding, and requires adaptability to various conditions and locations. You will be part of a diverse and international crew dedicated to providing exceptional guest experiences.
