Background

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading environmental authority in the United Nations system. It sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the UN system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

Responsibilities

This internship position is located in the Communication and Multimedia section of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in Nairobi. The intern will support the section in various communication and multimedia tasks. Specific responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting in the creation and dissemination of communication materials (e.g., social media content, press releases, website updates).
  • Supporting the production of multimedia content, including videos, infographics, and photos.
  • Conducting research on environmental topics and communication trends.
  • Monitoring and analyzing social media engagement and media coverage.
  • Providing administrative support to the Communication and Multimedia section.

Qualifications

To qualify for an internship at UNEP, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a degree programme in a university or equivalent institution in a field related to communication, journalism, media studies, environmental science, or a related discipline.
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and digital communication tools.
  • Proficiency in English is required. Knowledge of other UN languages is an asset.
  • Demonstrated interest in environmental issues and sustainable development.

Experience

No prior work experience is required, but experience in content creation, social media management, or multimedia production is an advantage.

Additional Information

This is an internship position. Interns receive a stipend to help cover basic living costs. The duration of the internship is typically three to six months.
