ASAI operates in five countries in East Africa: Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda and Zambia. We began operations in Kenya and Uganda in 2013, followed by Tanzania in 2014 and Rwanda in 2016. This segment is currently our smallest by both number of clients and size of loan portfolio.
The Communications Intern will support the Communications and Sustainability functions in implementing marketing, communications, and branding initiatives that promote ASA Kenya’s mission of financial inclusion.
This role provides a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in corporate communications, digital media, and stakeholder engagement within an international microfinance institution
Responsibilities or duties
Communications and Content Development
- Support the development of communication materials such as newsletters, client stories, internal updates, and social media content.
- Assist in drafting and editing content for marketing materials, reports, presentations, and the website.
- Help collect and document client success stories and impact stories from the field.
Marketing and Branding Support
- Assist in ensuring consistency in branding and messaging across communication materials in line with Group branding guidelines.
- Support the preparation of marketing materials such as brochures, posters, and campaign assets.
- Assist with market and competitor research to support marketing initiatives.
Digital Communications
- Support the management of ASA Kenya’s social media channels by helping create, schedule, and monitor posts.
- Assist in tracking engagement metrics and preparing basic performance reports.
- Support the development of digital content including graphics, short videos, or visuals.
Events and Stakeholder Engagement
- Assist in organizing internal and external events, campaigns, and outreach activities.
- Support the preparation of presentations and communication materials for stakeholders such as partners, regulators, and community leaders.
- Help coordinate logistics and documentation for communication initiatives.
Administrative and Operational Support
- Provide general support to the communications and sustainability teams on ongoing projects.
- Assist with maintaining communication archives, media coverage records, and content libraries.
- Support the preparation of periodic reports on communication activities.
Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)
Core competencies
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Creativity and storytelling ability
- Interest in digital media and content creation
- Organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
Education and Experience:
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Media Studies, or a related field (recent graduates are encouraged to apply).
- 0–1 year of experience, including internships, volunteer work, or academic projects in communications, marketing, or media.
- Basic familiarity with social media platforms and digital communication tools.
- Interest in development finance, financial inclusion, or social impact is an advantage.
Reporting line
The Communications Intern will report to the Sustainability Manager.
