Who we are
Girl Effect is an international non-profit that builds media that girls want, trust and need.
From chat-bots to chat-shows and TV dramas to tech, our content is reaching millions of girls in Africa and Asia to make choices and changes in their lives. Igniting their confidence to act differently at a time that can define their future.
We create safe spaces for girls, sharing facts, and answering questions about health, nutrition, education, relationships and so much more. And we use innovative technology so we can reach girls at scale. We arm girls with the skills to negotiate and redefine what they are told is possible, so every girl can choose to be in control of her body, her health, her learning and livelihood.
When a girl unlocks her power to make different choices that change her life, it inspires others to do so too. She starts a ripple effect that impacts her family, her community, her country. That’s the Girl Effect.
Context of the Role
Girl Effect’s Communications Department sits within the Development & Communications Function, working directly to mobilise funding for Girl Effect’s programmes. This team is the engine for all global communications activities, with a laser focus on supporting the organisation's ambitious fundraising goals.
As Communications Manager, you'll lead the day-to-day delivery of our communications strategy, working closely with the Head of Communications. You'll own key workstreams, act as the main point of contact for in-country communications leads, and work with partners' communications teams to support our funder relationships.
What You'll Do
Funder and partnership support
- Build working relationships with partners' communications teams, managing co-branded content, joint announcements and communications commitments
- Lead the production of funder-facing materials and updates for a range of audiences
- Produce assets and social content for events including global convenings, executive speaking engagements
Channels, digital and media
- Own the content calendar and the community management of Girl Effect’s LinkedIn, Instagram and YouTube channels
- Keep the digital estate up to date, including search and AI-answer presence
- Monitor media mentions, social engagement and sector news, tracking coverage, opportunities and risks
- Run the press office, including news announcements, monitoring and relationships with journalists in priority titles
Narrative, evidence and country support
- Embed the Girl Effect core narrative across all materials and channels
- Own the evidence pipeline with E&I and programmes teams, so results feed into storytelling
- Lead the country communications support model, acting as the go-to resource for in-country communications leads, including training, templates and shared assets so they have what they need from us, and we get what we need from them
Brand and internal communications
- Manage the asset library, photography and video archives and design templates, helping colleagues worldwide stay on brand
- Deliver Girl Effect's internal communications plan with the Head of Communications, including regular all-staff updates
Budget, suppliers and measurement
- Brief and manage freelance designers, film producers and agencies, keeping work on schedule and within budget
- Track delivery and engagement measures and report progress to the Head of Communications
This list should not be considered exhaustive; you will be expected to deliver other duties relevant and appropriate to this position.
Who You Are

- Highly organised, with a track record of running several projects at once and setting up systems that last
- Comfortable with digital tools such as Slack, Asana, Google Workspace and social media platforms
- Comfortable producing simple assets in Canva
- Culturally aware and respectful
- Passionate about Girl Effect’s work and mission
Minimum Experience Required
- Bachelor's degree in a related field, or equivalent practical experience in a communications role
- 4+ years' experience in external, donor or corporate communications, with non-profit or social impact experience preferred
- Design and editing experience, and willingness to learn across platforms and software
What Else You Should Know
As we continue to scale and grow - we are hugely ambitious for our future, and we are looking for people who are driven to change the world for girls.
Our teams are a diverse mix across sectors (non-profit and commercial) and specialisms (from Brand and Creative through to Gender and Insight). You’ll learn and grow in an environment that will challenge you to think and work with a fresh perspective. In turn, you can expect to work somewhere where you will be stretched and developed in your role, a place where you can build your career and work with talented, engaged people committed to our cause.
