Suits of Change, a storytelling initiative by Vice Versa Global, invites applications for a 3-month Community Journalism Fellowship designed to strengthen local reporting that connects everyday leadership and rights advocacy to real change on the ground.
Content creation: Researching, writing, and producing articles, news stories, and multimedia content. Story discovery: Staying informed on current events, monitoring press releases and social media, and developing new story ideas. Community engagement: Building and maintaining relationships with community members, leaders, and sources, acting as a point of contact, and seeking out content within the community. Fact-checking: Verifying all information to ensure accuracy and fairness. Collaboration: Working with editors, producers, and other journalists to develop and refine stories. Meeting deadlines: Managing time effectively to deliver work on time, often under pressure.
Writing and communication: Excellent written and verbal communication is essential for crafting clear, engaging stories and reports. Research: Strong research skills are needed to find and verify information, identify story ideas, and stay current on events. Interviewing: The ability to conduct interviews effectively and empathetically is fundamental to gathering firsthand information and diverse perspectives. Multimedia: Proficiency with various media formats, such as video, audio recording, and photography, is increasingly important. Problem-solving and critical thinking: This helps in investigating stories and finding creative ways to present information. Digital literacy: Familiarity with social media and online platforms is key for audience engagement and content distribution.
Education: A degree in Journalism, Mass Communications, or a related field is often a requirement. Experience: Prior work experience as a journalist or reporter is beneficial, as is a strong portfolio of work. Legal knowledge: Understanding of relevant laws, such as privacy and defamation, is necessary. Interpersonal skills: The ability to build rapport with a wide variety of people is crucial for gathering information and connecting with the community. Professionalism: Maintaining ethical standards, objectivity, accuracy, and the ability to work under pressure are vital.
