Overall Responsibility

The Community Oral Health Officer shall deliver comprehensive preventive, promotive, and fundamental curative oral health services. They will support early diagnosis and management of dental conditions and advance community oral health education. This role guarantees adherence to SafeCare standards, national oral health guidelines, and quality management systems, while maintaining patient safety and ethical standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct oral examinations, diagnosis, and treatment planning within the scope of practice.
  • Perform basic dental procedures, including scaling, polishing, fillings, uncomplicated extractions, and other minor oral surgical procedures.
  • Provide preventive oral health services, including fluoride application, fissure sealants, and oral hygiene instruction.
  • Ensure proper infection prevention and control practices in the dental clinic.
  • Maintain proper sterilization and disinfection of dental instruments and equipment.
  • Ensure accurate documentation of patient records and treatment notes in EMR systems.
  • Manage dental emergencies and provide timely referrals for complex cases beyond the scope.
  • Educate patients and communities on oral hygiene, nutrition, and the prevention of dental diseases.
  • Participate in outreach programs and community oral health promotion initiatives.
  • Monitor and manage dental supplies, materials, and equipment to prevent stock-outs and wastage.
  • Participate in clinical audits, SafeCare assessments, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Report notifiable conditions and support disease surveillance where applicable.
  • Ensure compliance with national dental regulatory requirements and facility policies.
  • Uphold professionalism, patient confidentiality, ethical standards, and respectful patient care at all times.

Job Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor's/Diploma in Community Oral Health from a recognized institution.
  • Valid practicing license from the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a hospital or accredited dental facility.
  • Strong understanding of infection prevention and dental clinical protocols.
  • Proficiency in dental record documentation and EMR systems.
  • Excellent patient communication and counseling skills.
  • High level of manual dexterity, attention to detail, and professionalism.
