Background
Founded in 2011, the Mara Elephant Project’s (MEP) mission is to protect Elephants and their habitats across the Greater Mara Ecosystem in Southwest Kenya. MEP started as an anti-poaching and human-wildlife conflict mitigation project. Since then, we have expanded to include cutting-edge research and conservation programs. We now operate in an expanded area and establish and run community development projects, continue our elephant collaring and monitoring program (over 80 elephants to date), and provide research outputs for national government and partners across Africa. We are a proud Kenyan organization that has provided employment, training, and professional development for 108 staff members.
Responsibilities
- Manage, organize, and curate MEP’s datasets and data systems to support high-quality reporting and conservation decision-making.
- Oversee MEP’s data platforms including Earth Ranger, Ecoscope, and ElephantBook.
- Lead preparation of weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual, and grant-related data reports.
- Ensure high-quality data standards through regular checking, cleaning, validation, and curation.
- Work closely with all MEP teams to ensure accurate and timely data entry and submission.
- Develop and implement procedures and workflows to improve data accuracy and consistency.
- Maintain reporting tools and automated reporting pipelines and ensure they are fully functional and tested.
- Collaborate with the Ecoscope team to design and develop new automated reporting pipelines.
- Supervise the data and reporting personnel within the Research & Conservation Department.
- Provide training and build staff capacity on data tools, reporting methods, and standards.
- Participate in scheduled internal meetings to give updates, share progress, and discuss challenges.
- Represent MEP in relevant external meetings, conferences, partner visits, and conservation events.
- Support the Director and Deputy Director with additional tasks to strengthen MEP’s conservation efforts.
- Follow up with field and data teams to ensure timely completion and submission of data forms.
- Manage and execute data backup procedures securely and efficiently.
- Oversee management, storage, and maintenance of GPS collars and collaring equipment.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Geomatics, GIS, Wildlife Management, Environmental Science, Conservation Biology, Ecology, or a related field (Master’s degree an added advantage).
- Proficiency in GIS software and spatial analysis techniques.
- Strong Python programming skills.
- Experience in designing and managing conservation-related databases.
- Familiarity with wildlife monitoring techniques, including GPS tracking and field-survey data.
- Experience using Earth Ranger Mobile Application or similar conservation data collection tools.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent communication skills for reporting, presentation, troubleshooting, and training.
- Solid project management skills with ability to coordinate across teams and meet deadlines.
- Knowledge of conservation principles, biodiversity monitoring, and habitat management.
- Experience organizing or facilitating workshops and training sessions.
- Ability to work effectively both virtually and in-person with diverse teams and stakeholders.
