Mount Kenya University is hiring a Debrailler/Braille Transcriber to transcribe learning materials into Braille and print formats and promote inclusive learning. The role is based in Thika and experience using Braille embossers & transcription software is required.
Responsibilities or duties
Reporting to: Dean of Students
Duties and responsibilities:
- Assist visually impaired students in accessing academic and non-academic materials.
- Convert printed materials into accessible formats including braille, audio, or digital formats as required.
- Support students with disabilities during lectures, tutorials, and examinations.
- Provide reading and transcription services for visually impaired users.
- Operate assistive technologies and devices used for learning support.
- Ensure timely preparation and delivery of accessible learning materials.
- Maintain confidentiality of academic documents and examination materials.
- Support disability inclusion services within Mount Kenya University.
- Assist in orientation and support programmes for students with visual impairments.
- Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor.
Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)
Must have:
- Bachelors’ Degree in Education with a specialization in Special Needs Education.
- At least 3 years’ relevant work experience in a recognized institution.
- Experience using Braille embossers and transcription software
- Understanding of accessible learning materials for visually impaired learners
OR
- Diploma in Education with a specialization in Special Needs Education.
- 5 years’ relevant experience in a recognized institution.
- Experience using Braille embossers and transcription software
- Understanding of accessible learning materials for visually impaired learners
