We are looking for an experienced Fiberglass Laminator to manufacture, mold, and finish high-quality composite components for commercial vehicle bodies (including bus roofs, aerodynamic cowlings, refrigerated body panels, and custom fairings). The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in hand lay-up, resin preparation, mold care, and composite finishing to ensure lightweight, durable, and weather-resistant vehicle body structures.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
Composite Molding: Prepare molds (cleaning, waxing, and applying gelcoat) and execute hand lay-up or spray-up processes using resin and fiberglass reinforcement mats.
Material & Resin Mixing: Accurately measure, blend, and mix thermoset resins, catalysts (hardeners), pigments, and fillers according to precise formulations and ambient temperature requirements.
Trimming & Finishing: Trim, grind, sand, drill, and detail cured composite panels to meet engineering specifications and ensure smooth, paint-ready surface finishes.
Assembly & Repairs: Install or bond fiberglass components onto vehicle body frames; diagnose, repair, and reinforce damaged fiberglass panels or molds as needed.
Chemical Safety & Maintenance: Ensure proper storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous resins, solvents, and catalysts; strictly enforce ventilation and respirator safety guidelines.
Qualifications & Key Requirements
Education: Craft Certificate, Vocational Diploma, or Technical Training in Composite Technology, Plastics Processing, Mechanical Craft, or a relevant discipline.
Experience: 2 to 4+ years of hands-on experience in composite fabrication and fiberglass laminating (automotive, marine, or industrial body panels).
Technical Skills:
- Expertise in hand lay-up, mold release preparation, gelcoat application, and resin ratio management.
- Proficiency in using air-powered grinders, sanders, cut-off tools, and finishing equipment.
- Deep understanding of thermoset chemistry (polyester, vinyl ester, epoxy resins) and structural core materials (foam, honeycomb).
- Knowledge of workplace health and safety regarding chemical vapor exposure and proper PPE use (respirators, gloves, eye protection).
