INTENSIVIST

Job Title: Intensivist (Critical Care Specialist)
Department: Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
Reports To: Medical Superintendent / Head of Clinical Services

Job Purpose

To provide specialized critical care services to patients requiring intensive monitoring and life-support interventions, ensuring high-quality, evidence-based management of critically ill patients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess, diagnose, and manage critically ill adult patients admitted to the ICU.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans.
  • Perform advanced critical care procedures including intubation, central venous catheter insertion, arterial line placement, and ventilator management.
  • Lead multidisciplinary ICU ward rounds.
  • Coordinate care with surgeons, physicians, anaesthetists, nurses, pharmacists, and allied health professionals.
  • Supervise ICU medical officers, residents, interns, and nursing staff.
  • Monitor patient outcomes and implement quality improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in emergency response teams and rapid response services.
  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation and ICU records.
  • Participate in clinical audits, morbidity and mortality meetings, and continuous professional development.
  • Ensure adherence to infection prevention, patient safety, and critical care protocols.
  • Participate in the hospital's on-call schedule.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB).
  • Master's degree or Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine, Anaesthesia with Critical Care, or equivalent.
  • Registered and licensed by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).
  • Valid practising licence.
  • Relevant experience in intensive care practice is desirable.
  • Certification in ACLS and BLS is mandatory.
