UNEP is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The UNEP Law Division is the Lead Division charged with carrying out the functions of UNEP in the field of environmental law, governance, and related policy issues, including those related to multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs). To fulfil its mandate, the work of the Law Division focuses on: leading the international community in the progressive developmental of environmental law; supporting States in the development and implementation of legal, institutional and policy measures that address emerging and important environmental challenges; facilitating cooperation and coordination among MEAs and between UNEP and those agreements; working with MEA Secretariats to support Parties to the respective MEAs in implementing their treaty obligations; and facilitating policy dialogue among States on issues relating to international environmental law and governance. The Environmental Governance Subprogramme (EGSP) is one of UNEP’s seven Subprogrammes and is a foundational pillar of UNEP’s work and plays a central role in supporting countries to establish, strengthen, and enforce the legal, institutional, and policy frameworks necessary for effective environmental management at the global, national and regional levels. It provides the foundational environment for delivering on UNEP’s strategic objectives in Climate Action, Land and Nature Action, and Chemicals and Pollution Action. This internship is located in the UNEP Environmental Governance Subprogramme Unit within the UNEP Law Division in Nairobi.

Responsibilities or duties

Under the direct supervision of the Global Environmental Governance Sub-Programme Coordinator within the Environmental Governance Subprogramme Unit or his designated representative(s), the intern is expected to:

  • Design and develop interactive dashboards using Microsoft Power BI to visualize environmental governance indicators and Member State reporting metrics.
  • Support the management and optimization of the Subprogramme's SharePoint knowledge repository, including organizing documents, creating metadata structures, and improving search functionality.
  • Analyze Member State reporting data to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities for enhanced environmental governance support.
  • Create data visualization materials and infographics to support policy briefs, technical reports, and presentations.
  • Support the development of automated reporting workflows using Microsoft Teams and Excel to streamline data collection from regional offices and country teams.
  • Document knowledge management processes and develop user guides for internal systems and tools.
  • Assist in quality assurance and data validation processes for environmental governance indicators and reporting metrics.
  • Support the team in preparing materials for high-level meetings, including the UN Environment Assembly and MEA Conference of Parties sessions.
  • Undertake additional assignments as may be required by the Subprogramme Coordinator, including tasks that contribute to the intern's learning experience and career development in the field of environmental governance.

Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (Master's degree or equivalent, or higher) in Information Technology, Computer Science, Data Science, Information Management, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, International Relations, or related field.

b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent) in the above-mentioned fields.

c. Have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Applicants must at the time of application:

  • Be computer literate in standard software applications with advanced proficiency in Microsoft Power BI, SharePoint, Teams, and Excel.
  • Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Experience needed

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. However, the following skills and knowledge are highly desirable: Proficiency in Microsoft Power BI for creating dashboards and data visualizations. Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel including pivot tables, data analysis functions. Experience with SharePoint administration and content management; Experience with data analysis and statistical methods. Understanding of database management principles and data quality assurance practices. Strong research and analytical skills with attention to detail.
