Licensed Legal Officer needed

Position Overview
The Licensed Legal Officer supports the organisation’s legal, compliance, and regulatory functions by providing legal research, drafting, advisory assistance, and case preparation. The role is ideal for a recent law graduate who has completed the Advocates Training Programme (ATP), holds a valid practice license or pupilage completion, and is seeking to develop practical experience in Kenyan legal practice under supervision.
Key Responsibilities
1. Legal Research & Analysis
Conduct legal research on Kenyan statutes, case law, regulations, and policy issues.
Draft legal research memos, briefs, and opinion summaries for senior counsel.
Analyse legal risks and recommend appropriate mitigation strategies.
2. Drafting & Document Preparation
Draft legal documents including contracts, legal opinions, pleadings, affidavits, letters, and internal briefs.
Ensure documents meet legal, regulatory, and organisational requirements.
Prepare court filings, witness bundles, and procedural documents.
3. Litigation & Case Support
Assist in preparing matters for court, tribunals, negotiations, or ADR processes.
Manage case files, organise evidence, and support discovery processes.
Liaise with external advocates, registries, and government offices (e.g., Judiciary, State Law Office, EACC, registries).
4. Legal Advisory & Client Support
Support senior lawyers in providing legal advice to departments or clients on matters involving Kenyan law.
Attend client or stakeholder meetings, prepare minutes, and track follow-up actions.
Respond to routine legal queries under supervision.
5. Compliance & Regulatory Support
Assist in developing and reviewing internal policies, compliance frameworks, and governance documents.
Support compliance with Kenyan laws such as labour laws, company law, data protection (DPA 2019), public procurement (PPADA), and sector-specific regulations.
Participate in audits, risk assessments, and internal compliance reviews.
6. Administrative & Operational Support
Maintain organised legal files, digital records, and case management systems.
Track deadlines, hearing dates, and statutory timelines.
Manage legal correspondence and support departmental operations.
7. Professional Growth & Development
Participate in training sessions, workshops, and CPD programmes as required by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).
Adhere to legal ethics, confidentiality requirements, and professional standards.
Continuously develop skills relevant to litigation, corporate law, compliance, and advisory work.
Qualifications & Requirements
Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from a recognised university.
Completion of the Advocates Training Programme (ATP) at the Kenya School of Law.
Valid practising license or proof of recent admission as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya (or awaiting admission but licensed for limited practice).
Strong legal research and writing skills using resources such as eKLR, Kenya Law, and legal databases.
Excellent communication, analytical, and organisational abilities.
High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professional ethics.
Proficiency in MS Office and familiarity with legal document management systems.
