Responsibilities or duties
Receive and process any prescriptions that are brought to the pharmacy
Counsel patients on drug administration for optimum customer satisfaction.
Compounding drugs when required, for effective service provision.
Check expiry dates of all incoming stock and bring to the attention of the pharmacy supervisor. Expiry checks must also be done prior to dispensing to prevent anomalies in service delivery.
Comply with storage requirements of pharmaceuticals by documenting room and fridge temperatures on daily basis.
Comply and observe the environmental health and safety measures and regulations by ensuring that pharmacy shelves are neat, tidy and fully stacked and that stock is rotated.
Dispense the drugs accurately and in a timely manner to uphold quality standards of the department.
Ensure the accuracy of the label with prescription before dispensing for right patient, right drug, and right quantity, for effective service delivery.
Contact the doctor or physician for illegibility and inaccuracy in prescription order, proper documentation and communication of it to nursing and pharmacy staff.
Take responsibility for the processing and sorting of returned drugs from wards as required.
Participate in the receipt of goods from central stores and their ultimate storage and stock rotation in the Pharmacy Department.
Ensure complete documentation of all patient documents, interventions, incidents and other records kept in the department.
Ensure that the variance levels in stocks is kept to a minimum.
To participate in stock takes and inventory checks
Sending pre-authorisation emails to insurance/ corporates and following up with the relevant company and credit controller.
Process discharges, ensure ward stocks, disposables, services and correct medication has been posted
To perform any other duties from time to time as may be assigned by the in-charge.
Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)
Diploma in pharmacy from an accredited institution
Enrolled with the pharmacy and poisons board
Active annual practice license for 2026
Experience needed
Min 3-4 years’ experience working in a busy hospital
