Background

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the United Nations agency mandated to promote sustainable urban development and human settlements globally. It is the focal point for urbanization and human settlements within the UN system. UN-Habitat works to shape the future of cities and human settlements to ensure that adequate shelter is provided for all and to foster sustainable human settlements in an urbanizing world.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Head of the Programme Management Unit, the Programme Management Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of UN-Habitat's strategic priorities and work plans.
  • Provide support in the planning, execution, and monitoring of various programme activities.
  • Assist in the preparation of programme documents, reports, and other relevant materials.
  • Facilitate communication and coordination among programme stakeholders, including government counterparts, UN agencies, and civil society organizations.
  • Support in resource mobilization efforts and contribute to the development of funding proposals.
  • Undertake field missions as required to monitor programme implementation and provide technical assistance.
  • Contribute to knowledge management and sharing of best practices in urban development.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in urban planning, development studies, public administration, social sciences, or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in programme management, development cooperation, or a related area is required.
  • Experience in the field of human settlements and sustainable urban development is desirable.
  • Experience working with international organizations or UN agencies is an asset.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
