Background
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading environmental authority in the United Nations system. It sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the UN system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.
This consultancy is to support the implementation of the Tanzania Project, focusing on social and environmental safeguards. The expert will work closely with project teams and national stakeholders to ensure compliance with UNEP's environmental and social policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
The Social & Environment Safeguards Expert will be responsible for the following:
- Conduct environmental and social impact assessments for project activities.
- Develop and implement environmental and social management plans.
- Provide guidance and training to project staff and partners on safeguard policies.
- Monitor project implementation to ensure compliance with safeguards.
- Prepare reports on safeguard compliance and performance.
- Liaise with national authorities and other stakeholders on environmental and social matters.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental science, social science, environmental management, or a related field.
- A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
- Proven experience in applying environmental and social safeguards in development projects, preferably in the East African region.
- Knowledge of international environmental and social standards and best practices.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and report-writing skills.
- Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Swahili is an asset.
Experience
A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in environmental and social safeguards is required.
Additional Notes
This is a consultancy position. The duration of the contract will be determined based on project needs.
