Purpose of Position:

The Sonographer will be responsible for performing high-quality retinal imaging (fundoscopy) for pregnant women enrolled in the PEARLS MATRIX Study. The role ensures accurate image acquisition, adherence to imaging protocols, and optimal data quality to support AI-assisted analysis and clinical research outcomes.

Responsibilities or duties:

  • Perform retinal imaging (fundoscopy) for study participants according to protocol
  • Ensure proper patient preparation, positioning and comfort during imaging procedures
  • Maintain high-quality image acquisition standards and repeat poor-quality images where necessary
  • Ensure correct labeling, documentation, and secure transfer of retinal images to study systems
  • Conduct basic quality checks of captured images before upload
  • Ensure adherence to study SOPs, infection prevention and data security procedures
  • Maintain and care for fundoscopy equipment, reporting faults or maintenance needs promptly
  • Support participant flow during imaging sessions in coordination with study staff
  • Liaise with Research Midwives and clinical teams to ensure smooth integration of imaging into ANC workflow
  • Participate in training, refresher sessions and study meetings as required
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with study protocols and Good Clinical Practice (GCP)

Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills):

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in any of the following areas Sonography, Radiography, Ophthalmic Imaging or an equivalent field.
  • Valid professional registration/license with relevant regulatory body.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to produce high-quality diagnostic images.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a busy antenatal clinic environment.

Experience needed:

  • Prior 2 years’ experience in ultrasound, ophthalmic imaging or retinal imaging is an added advantage.
  • Experience in clinical research or maternal health studies is desirable.
