Background

Britam is seeking a qualified and experienced professional to fill the position of Tax and Compliance Officer. The role is responsible for managing tax compliance, preparing and filing tax returns with the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) and Zanzibar Revenue Authority (ZRA), advising on tax strategy, handling audits, and ensuring compliance with applicable local tax laws and regulations. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong analytical capabilities and in-depth knowledge of Tanzanian tax legislation.

Job Purpose

To ensure full compliance with all statutory tax obligations by preparing, reviewing, and submitting tax returns accurately and on time, managing tax audits, advising on tax risks, and supporting the implementation of effective tax policies and procedures within the Company.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and submit all tax returns including VAT, PAYE, Income Tax, Withholding Tax, and other applicable taxes accurately and within statutory timelines.
  • Generate monthly, quarterly, and annual tax reports and maintain detailed and accurate tax payment records.
  • Review new and proposed tax legislation to identify areas of potential exposure to the Company and recommend appropriate mitigation measures.
  • Act as the primary contact person for tax audits conducted by TRA and ZRA, prepare supporting documentation, and respond to inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
  • Oversee implementation of all tax-related policies, procedures, and compliance frameworks within the Company.
  • Ensure all tax-related transactions and communications are properly documented, recorded, and controlled.
  • Train relevant internal stakeholders on tax matters, including updates on new tax regulations and changes in legislation.
  • Liaise with tax authorities, external auditors, tax consultants, and other relevant external stakeholders.
  • Conduct tax reviews and compliance checks to ensure adherence to statutory requirements.
  • Prepare and implement the Company’s Transfer Pricing policy in line with regulatory requirements.
  • Contribute to the development and enhancement of tax accounting systems and processes.
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Working Relationships

Internal Relationships:

  • Accountable to the Chief Accountant.
  • Required to liaise and work closely with all staff across departments.

External Relationships:

  • Britam customers.
  • Service providers.
  • Tax authorities and regulatory bodies.

Knowledge, Experience and Qualifications Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Law, or a related field.
  • Not less than three (3) years’ experience in a tax environment.
  • Fully qualified accountant with Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) qualification will be an added advantage.

Technical and Functional Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of taxation laws and concepts.
  • Familiarity with tax return processes and related compliance requirements.
  • Tax compliance and transactional structuring expertise.
