Background
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading environmental authority in the United Nations system. It sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the UN system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.
This consultancy position is within the Ecosystems Division, specifically supporting projects related to ecosystem protection, pollution control, and climate resilience in Mozambique. The consultant will contribute to the development and implementation of strategies and projects aimed at addressing environmental challenges in the region.
Responsibilities
The Technical Consultant will be responsible for a range of tasks including, but not limited to:
- Providing technical expertise and guidance on ecosystem protection, pollution prevention, and climate resilience strategies.
- Supporting the design and implementation of environmental projects in Mozambique.
- Conducting research and analysis on environmental issues relevant to the project objectives.
- Assisting in the preparation of project proposals, reports, and other relevant documentation.
- Facilitating stakeholder consultations and engagement.
- Monitoring and evaluating project progress and impact.
- Contributing to knowledge sharing and capacity building activities.
Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experience:
- Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental science, environmental management, climate change, or a related field.
- A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of relevant professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
- A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in environmental protection, pollution control, or climate resilience, preferably in a developing country context.
- Proven experience in project management and implementation.
- Strong analytical and research skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in English is required. Knowledge of Portuguese is an asset.
- Experience working with international organizations or UN agencies is desirable.
Other Information
This is a consultancy position. The duration of the contract will be determined based on project needs. The consultant will be based in Nairobi, Kenya, but may be required to travel to Mozambique and other locations as needed.
