Job Purpose
To safely, efficiently, and professionally operate a 28-tonne trailer for the transportation of goods while ensuring compliance with traffic laws, company policies, and road safety standards. The role is responsible for vehicle safety, cargo security, fuel efficiency, documentation accuracy, and supporting effective fleet management practices.
Key Responsibilities
Vehicle Operations
- Operate a 28-tonne trailer safely and efficiently in accordance with the Traffic Act and company procedures.
- Transport goods to designated destinations within agreed delivery timelines.
- Conduct pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip vehicle inspections.
- Ensure proper loading, securing, and unloading of cargo to prevent damage or loss.
- Adhere to all road safety regulations and defensive driving principles.
- Report accidents, incidents, breakdowns, and mechanical defects immediately.
Fleet Management
- Maintain assigned vehicle in roadworthy condition through routine inspections.
- Coordinate scheduled servicing and preventive maintenance with the Fleet Department.
- Monitor vehicle performance and promptly report any abnormalities.
- Support vehicle utilization and fleet optimization initiatives.
Fuel Management
- Monitor fuel consumption and ensure economical vehicle operation.
- Maintain accurate fuel records and mileage logs.
- Report unusual fuel consumption or suspected fuel losses.
- Promote fuel-efficient driving techniques to reduce operational costs.
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate trip sheets, delivery notes, logbooks, inspection reports, and fuel records.
- Ensure all statutory vehicle documents remain valid and available during trips.
- Obtain customer delivery confirmations and submit documentation promptly.
- Maintain complete and accurate transport records.
Safety & Compliance
- Comply with Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) requirements and company safety policies.
- Ensure proper use of PPE where required.
- Participate in safety briefings, toolbox talks, and driver performance reviews.
- Maintain zero tolerance for unsafe driving practices.
Other Duties
- Support inventory verification where required during loading and offloading.
- Assist in investigations relating to transport incidents.
- Perform any other duties assigned by management within the scope of the role.
Qualifications
Academic Qualifications
- Minimum Diploma from a recognized institution.
Professional Qualifications
- Valid Kenyan Driving Licence Class G.
- Valid Certificate of Good Conduct.
- Valid Medical Fitness Certificate.
- Defensive Driving Certificate (Mandatory).
- Training in Fleet Management is an added advantage.
- Training in Fuel Management is an added advantage.
- First Aid Certification is an added advantage.
Experience
- Minimum 8 years’ experience operating heavy commercial vehicles.
- Proven experience driving 28-tonne trailers.
- Experience transporting FMCG, industrial, or bulk goods is an added advantage.
- Demonstrated accident-free driving record is preferred.
