Job Role Context
We are seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Commercial Vehicle Welder to join our production team. In this role, you will be responsible for fabricating, fitting, and welding structural components, chassis frame extensions, sub-frames, safety cages, and exterior metal panels for commercial vehicles (such as trucks, buses, trailers, and specialized utility bodies). You will work closely with technical engineering drawings to ensure all fabrications meet precise dimensions and strict structural integrity standards.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
- Fabrication & Assembly: Cut, shape, align, and weld steel, aluminum, and stainless steel structural components according to technical blueprints and work orders.
- Welding Operations: Perform high-quality MIG/MAG and TIG welding on structural steel, chassis sub-assemblies, and sheet metal panels while controlling heat distortion.
- Preparation & Fitting: Clean, bevel, clamp, and tack-welding parts prior to final welding; operate workshop machinery including angle grinders, plasma cutters, drill presses, and guillotine shears.
- Quality Assurance: Inspect welded joints for structural strength, uniform bead quality, and freedom from defects (such as cracks, porosity, or burn-through).
- Maintenance & Safety: Perform routine maintenance on welding rigs and equipment; strictly adhere to workshop safety protocols, including wearing required PPE and maintaining a safe work environment.
Qualifications & Key Requirements
- Education: Certificate or Trade Test (Grade I, II, or III) / Diploma in Welding & Fabrication, Mechanical Engineering, or a related trade.
- Certifications: AWS certification (e.g., AWS D1.1 Structural Welding or AWS D1.2 Structural Aluminum Welding) or equivalent standard certification is highly desirable.
- Experience: 2 to 5+ years of practical welding and metal fabrication experience, ideally within commercial vehicle bodybuilding, heavy machinery, or structural steel industries.
- Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in MIG/MAG and TIG welding techniques across various metals and gauges. Strong ability to read and interpret complex engineering/CAD drawings and schematics. Excellent measurement and spatial estimation skills.
